We LOVE using our creative talents to come up with a themed cake that is consistent with our contemporary & whimsical style, and that suits your tastes and budget, without necessarily involving much “sculpting” or the use of inedible structural elements. Over the years, we’ve noticed that our clients LOVE our natural, clean, and modern style - and it’s not typical for our clientele to request very elaborate sculpted cakes, or “novelty” cakes with overly literal or complicated themes. And, when we can’t avoid it, we make very specific diagrams for our clients (and/or their catering team) so that all inedible elements can be safely separated from the cake during serving.Įach cake artist specializes in certain styles and techniques. Needless to say, this unholy merging of the edible and the non-edible has never sat well with us, so we avoid it whenever possible. They’re made from things like copper wiring, aquarium tubing, styrofoam, and even threaded rods, washers and bolts! (In other words, more “Home Depot” than actual food.) The armature then needs to be treated in some way to make it food-safe, but all of these materials make it almost impossible for our clients to cut and serve their cakes with ease. Many sculpted / “3-D” cakes require internal supports and armatures, which are typically inedible. Our sculpted cakes are priced accordingly (minimum order = $2,000) and we NEVER negotiate on pricing for handmade edible art like this that isn’t mass-produced. All of this amounts to an enormous investment of time and skill - more than most of the wedding cakes we create (even the “Fine Art” ones!). Finally, the cake needs to be safely delivered and set up at its final destination, including any “damage control” - to fix cracks or other issues that may have arisen during (bumpy) road transport. And then, there’s the actual creation time: mixing, baking, filling, stacking, carving, chilling, decorating, painting, piping, etc. There’s the specialized equipment we need to source to create certain structural elements to support the cake. There’s the planning process, requiring back-and-forth emails with our clients to finalize the details, followed by custom sketches and “blueprints” of the cake to help us envision the project before the cake layers have even been baked. Most sculpted / “3-D” cakes are extremely time-consuming to create. However, we’d like our clients to keep in mind the following: We’ve learnt a thing or two about how best to construct them. Whisk or beat with a wooden spoon until thoroughly combined. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, canola oil, eggs, and sour cream. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon. We’ve spent more than 12 years creating elaborate “3-D” / sculpted cakes, carved into many intricate shapes like ‘59 Chevy Corvettes and Millennium Falcons and grand pianos. Generously butter a 9 x 13 pan or glass baking dish and set aside. Special note regarding elaborate sculpted “3-D” cakes:
